An arch held up by a wooden frame while its keystone is lowered into place

AI is the frame that holds the work up while it’s built. Your thinking is the keystone.

If you’ve tried using AI for your content, you’ve seen what it does to your ideas. It smooths them out, fills the gaps with whatever is most common, and hands back something clean and generic. You know, what people now so elegantly call “AI slop.”

Then you spend an hour putting your thinking back in, or you post something that doesn’t read like your work. AI was supposed to give you leverage. Instead it gave you a second job: editing.

Then you spend an hour putting your thinking back in, or you post something that doesn’t read like your work. AI was supposed to give you leverage. Instead it gave you a second job: editing.

And now readers are watching for it. Since July, anyone on LinkedIn can flag a post as “Seems like AI slop,” and LinkedIn says posts it classifies as slop already get 40% fewer views. When your reputation is what you sell, a post that reads like AI costs you more than reach. It makes people wonder whether the thinking behind it is yours.

You’ve spent years getting very good at one thing. You have your own way of doing it, and the people who hire you get results. Most of them found you through someone who already knew you.

Referrals are a good sign, but you can’t control them. They come when they come, and you can’t turn them up when you need more work.

Referrals are a good sign, but you can’t control them. They come when they come, and you can’t turn them up when you need more work.

You also have more ideas than you can use. Years of work, your own frameworks, maybe a book, and several things you could sell. When you post about all of it, people see several different versions of you and can’t tell which one to hire.

When you try to fix that with content, the usual advice is to post more, stay consistent and grow an audience. So you write tips and frameworks, and they get a few likes. Then someone with half your experience posts something similar the same week, and readers can’t tell the two of you apart. The content doesn’t show what you can actually do, so it doesn’t bring you the clients you want.

Handing your content to someone else doesn’t fix that on its own. A good ghostwriter helps, but they can only work from what you tell them on calls. You explain your thinking again every week, and the drafts still don’t sound like you. When someone on your team handles it, they have to guess at your views.

AI can help, but only if you give it the right job. Used to replace your thinking, it waters your work down. Used as a studio around your thinking, it does most of the drafting and formatting, asks the questions that sharpen your ideas, and gives you back time for the parts of your work you actually enjoy.

“AI is for making more content.”

The leverage is in what you do with your hours. A studio takes most of the drafting and formatting off your plate, so your time goes to the thinking and each piece carries more of it. Some people end up publishing less.

Used well, it means thinking more clearly. AI can interview you, find the gaps in an argument and push back on a claim that doesn’t hold. You still do the thinking, with better questions in front of you.

“A better prompt, or a project full of notes, will fix it.”

“A better prompt, or a project full of notes, will fix it.”

Both help. A prompt starts from zero, and a project with notes gives the AI some background. But notes about your company don’t tell it what you believe, what you’d never say or which of your ideas matter most. And one assistant still does every job: it decides what’s worth saying, writes it and judges it. So it fills the gaps with whatever is most common.

How a studio turns your experience into a body of work

Think of your career as a tree. Over the years you’ve grown branches, which are your dense ideas, your methods and your ways of thinking. A branch needs time to explain, so it can’t fit in a single post or video. It needs a long essay, a series of essays, a series of interviews or a book.

Leaves grow from branches. A leaf is one idea that a reader can take in from a single post. Every leaf belongs to a branch, and every branch belongs to the tree.

A branch is a long essay on Substack; its leaves are LinkedIn posts

A branch is a long essay on Substack; its leaves are LinkedIn posts

That’s how your studio builds your content. It drafts the branches first as long pieces, such as essays on Substack. Then it cuts those pieces into leaves, such as posts on LinkedIn. Each short post connects to a deeper idea, and each deeper idea connects back to you. Over time, someone who finds one post can follow it to the whole body of your work, and from there to working with you or recommending you.

The roots are your values and beliefs. Written down, together with your thesis (your central claim about your field), your views and the topics you return to, they become your brand tree: the documents everything in your studio grows from.

Great work often splits these jobs. The Beatles wrote the songs, George Martin produced them, and Abbey Road was the studio. AI tools on their own try to do all three jobs at once: they fill the gaps in your ideas with common ones, decide what’s good by what works for everyone else, and do the writing. A studio gives each job back to its owner, and that’s what keeps your work deep while AI does the heavy lifting around it.

A studio can do most of the making, but someone still has to decide what’s worth making. Maxwell Perkins, the editor behind F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, cut large parts of Thomas Wolfe’s first novel before it came out in 1929 as Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe wrote every word. Perkins decided which ones readers would see.

That’s the producer’s job. A good producer delivers what you asked for. A great one decides what’s worth making, draws out ideas you didn’t know you had, cuts what doesn’t work, and tells you when a piece isn’t ready.

AI can draft, and it can check a draft against rules you give it. It has no experience of your work, though, so it can’t tell which of your ideas matters most, or whether a piece will land with someone who wasn’t there when you had the idea. That takes judgment, and judgment needs some distance from the work. Stephen King puts a finished draft away for at least six weeks before he rereads it, so he can read it the way a stranger would.

Judging your own work is hard for the same reason, and the workshop shows you how to build that distance in. If someone on your team or a writer you already work with takes the producer role, they learn it the same way.

About me

I’m Josué Valles. I’ve done content work online for about twelve years. I learned the craft as a content writer at agencies like Codeless and Siege Media, then grew my own LinkedIn account from zero to 100,000 followers in a year. Since then I’ve produced content for founders, investors and coaches, first as a ghostwriter and now through my company, Subject House. Today I have over 130,000 followers on LinkedIn and over 20,000 newsletter subscribers.

Your brand tree

You’ll write a first draft with a guided interview you run with AI. It asks about the advice you ignored, the mistakes your clients keep making, and the popular ideas in your field you think are wrong. Your strongest positions show up in those answers. You’ll also decide what you’ll stop talking about, so everything you publish builds one recognizable brand. This is the part that stops AI from filling the gaps with common ideas, because your brand tree has already filled them with yours. It’s also the first place your thinking gets sharper: you’ll find views you hold but have never put into words, and ideas that don’t hold up yet.

3

Your formats

One long format for your branches, such as an essay, and one or two short ones for your leaves, such as LinkedIn posts. Each comes with a one-page brief to fill in before you start. You stop facing a blank page, and you stop squeezing your ideas into templates built for someone else.

Your AI crew

A strategist, a writer, an editor and a designer, set up in your AI app. You’ll write each one’s instructions from your brand tree. The strategist helps you decide what’s worth saying, the writer drafts, the editor pushes for clarity and the designer handles visuals. You spend your time reacting and deciding instead of starting from scratch.

How to judge a piece before it goes out by reading it twice: once as a piece of work (is it clear and well built?) and once for meaning (does it carry your idea to the person reading it?). You’ll also learn when to leave a good piece alone, and how to keep enough distance to judge your own work.
